Guys

Simply stated, these photographs are of men. Simultaneously, and with greater complexity, these photographs are of guys. Who are guys? What are they like? What do they think about?

These inquiries all began from an introspective journey defining my particular masculinity. As I am getting older, I have a clearer, less conflicted perspective on my own identity then I did during earlier stages of my life. My photographs sought to contemplate the man that I am, through the men that I know. I soon discovered that most are like me; complicated and simple at the same time.

All of the guys in the photographs speak to a part of myself, however great or small, but before long the process behind the camera transcended from my investigation of the personal, for I soon discovered I was contemplating the masculinity of the “every man” of our society.

I am interested in how guys present themselves to the world. How do they carry their bodies, shape their facial expressions, maintain their posture and presentation? How do they construct their surroundings, fill their personal space, wear the clothes on their bodies? Are they overt or covert about their masculinity? Based on these perceptions, I have created photographs that describe the possibilities of what it means to be a guy.
